Steps to prepare Joulutortut

Step 1: Roll out your puff pastry

Preheat your oven to 200°c.

Unroll your puff pastry and place it on baking paper. Then cut out 8 by 8 cm squares with a pastry wheel or a cookie cutter. The pastry wheel will give you a nice wavy cut!

Step 2: Cutting in the corners

Still using the rolling pin, make incisions in each corner of the squares. These incisions should not meet in the center of the square! Leave about 1.5 to 2 cm without a cut in the center of the square.

Step 3: Shape the Christmas stars

This step is a little more complicated than the others, so I advise you to follow the video.

You will roll out every other corner to the center of the square, starting with the top right corner. Flatten the dough in the center so that the shape does not move when baking.

Step 4: Add jam

In the center of each square, place a spoonful of plum jam. Plum jam has been used for many years in Finland, but if you don't like it, you can use another jam!

Step 5: Baking

Bake your Christmas stars (Joulutortut) at 200°c for 10 to 15 minutes depending on the power of your oven. When they come out of the oven, your Joulutortut should be golden brown and the puff pastry should have risen.
